- M. Coetzee’s Life and Times of Michael K is a profound exploration of an individual’s quest for freedom amid political oppression and social disintegration in apartheid-era South Africa. The novel traces the physical and spiritual journey of Michael K, a marginalized and socially alienated man who seeks autonomy beyond the control of the state. His peregrination across a war-torn landscape becomes a search not only for freedom but also for belonging and love. Through his deep connection with the natural world, Michael discovers an alternative mode of existence that resists institutional authority and human violence. This paper examines Michael K’s journey through the lenses of existentialism and ecocriticism, arguing that his ultimate freedom and experience of love emerge through his harmonious relationship with nature. The study demonstrates how Coetzee reimagines the bond between humanity and the environment as a source of liberation and emotional fulfillment.
