Abstract

Eating disorders (ED), formerly thought to be an uncommon condition, are increasingly widespread. Studies on ED in the Indian population are still incredibly hard to find, though. Research has shown that people with eating disorders also experience mood difficulties. The most recent survey, the National Mental Health Survey of India, does not include mental health issues despite the fact that they are becoming more prevalent as society changes quickly. Adolescents who have depression also have co-occurring conditions such behaviour disorders, personality disorders, substance abuse, or anxiety disorders. In light of this, the goals of this study were to investigate the incidence of eating disorders in India, as well as to learn about potential comorbidities and investigate the numerous risk factors that can lead to eating disorders. A systematic review was carried out for the current research project, and secondary databases like Research Gate, Google Scholar, ERIC, Frontiers, and PubMed were investigated. The study went into great detail on the chosen studies and their results. To organise the data, an exploratory and descriptive research design were used. This study aided in understanding the incidence of eating disorders in India as well as risk factors that are more suitable to the Indian culture. As a result, effective parenting and therapy strategies were suggested.
