Globalization changes the competitive environment of local businesses through cross-border trade, foreign investment, technology transfer, digital platforms and global value chains. This conceptual review examines opportunities and adjustment pressures for local firms, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises. It synthesizes the supplied literature on import competition, productivity, innovation, foreign-investment spillovers and supplier relationships. International integration can expand demand, improve access to inputs and knowledge, and encourage quality upgrading. These gains depend on management, finance, skills and the ability to absorb new technology. Local firms also face powerful competitors, demanding standards, platform dependence and exposure to external disruptions. The effects are therefore uneven across firms and sectors. The review concludes that differentiation, workforce development, digital capability, collaboration and diversified sourcing can strengthen competitiveness when supported by effective institutions. It presents a conceptual synthesis rather than new survey findings or a causal estimate for a particular locality.
