Augmented reality (AR) integrates computer-generated information, three-dimensional models, audio, animation and interactive instructions with a user’s real-world environment. Unlike virtual reality, which generally replaces the physical environment, AR enriches existing surroundings through smartphones, tablets, head-mounted displays and smart glasses. This capability has created significant opportunities in school education, higher education and professional training. AR allows learners to visualize abstract concepts, manipulate virtual objects, receive context-sensitive guidance and practise complex procedures in comparatively safe environments. It is increasingly applied in science, engineering, medicine, vocational education, industrial maintenance, military preparation, emergency response and employee onboarding. This article examines the educational foundations, applications, benefits and limitations of augmented reality. It uses a structured review of scholarly literature to analyse AR’s influence on academic achievement, motivation, spatial understanding, skill acquisition and workplace performance. Evidence generally indicates that well-designed AR can improve learning outcomes, particularly when tasks require visualization, interaction or procedural guidance. Nevertheless, effectiveness depends on instructional design, teacher competence, device accessibility, content quality and learner characteristics. High implementation costs, technical problems, cognitive overload, privacy risks and insufficient long-term evidence remain important concerns. The article concludes that AR should supplement purposeful instruction rather than be adopted only for technological novelty.
